A letter from the Commodore
March 16, 2017
Dear AYC Members and Friends,
Warm summer days are on the way – and where better to enjoy them than at the Yacht Club on Lake Androscoggin? As it has for over a century, the club offers opportunities for sailing, motoring, paddling, swimming or just relaxing on the sand. There will be the full array of suppers and picnics, as well as the annual dance and the sailing regatta. The Club’s superb instructors from last year will return – Mary Erb teaching swimming for all levels and Joel Ellis coaching sailing – and Ken Martin will apply his expertise again as caretaker. And, since last October, a longer ramp is now in place for launching boats. Remember: this is all possible because of the contributions of members – in the form of dues, donations to the Capital Reserve and old‑fashioned volunteerism. Here’s what 2017 has in store:
Dock Launch Day and Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, May 6th at 8am: All hands are needed to help launch docks, tidy the grounds and put the clubhouse in order. (Coffee & donuts served!)
June Membership Meeting on Saturday, June 17th: Social hour starts at 5:30 pm, followed by a potluck supper at 6:15 pm. Please stay for the meeting at 7:00 pm to vote on new members (a quorum is needed). Mark your calendars!
Swimming Lessons: After a record‑setting swim season as a Connecticut College freshman, Mary Erb will instruct at the Club again this summer, so please enroll your kids or grandkids and help spread the word about this opportunity. Increasing swim enrollment is a key goal this year. As usual, swimmers can register for any or all of the three two‑week‑long sessions, which begin on July 3rd, July 17th, and July 31st. For beginners and advanced beginners, lessons will be 30 minutes per day (5 hours per session); for intermediates and above, lessons will be 45 minutes per day (7.5 hours per session). Please return registration forms by the due dates on the calendar.
Sailing Lessons on Saturdays: Sailing is for everyone – the young and the young at heart, first‑time beginners or old hands honing their skills. Lessons will be on four Saturdays starting July 8th. There will be three time slots offered: 8-10:30 am, 11-1:30 pm and 2-4:00 pm. Please return registration forms by the due dates on the accompanying calendar.
Fundraising Supper on Saturday, July 8th at 6 pm: Please attend for a great meal and lively company. This is a very important event for sustaining the club, and it requires plenty of help – so to volunteer please contact AYC Secretary Shelley Reed (firstname.lastname@example.org or 685-5522).
Family Picnic Nights on Thursdays, starting at 6pm: Members are welcome to bring their own dinners and make use of the club’s outdoor grill and tables, from July 6th until August 10th.
Annual AYC Dance on Saturday, July 22nd, 8-10:30 pm: A great Wayne tradition, with appetizers, cocktails and live music, coordinated by Mary Sheridan.
Sailing Regatta on Sunday, July 30th: Captains will meet at 12.30 and the race starts at 1pm, coordinated by Hazel and David Stevenson. Sailboats of any type may take part.
Annual Meeting on Saturday, August 26th at 7:00 pm: The Club’s annual business meeting will start with a social time at 5:30 pm, followed by a potluck supper at 6:15 pm. This meeting requires a quorum of members – so please mark your calendars!
Membership Fees: Dues for 2017 remain unchanged at $95 for a family and $55 for an individual. See details on the application form or call an AYC officer for further information.
Moorings: If you have questions about moorings, please contact Joel Ellis at 212-0109.
Rentals: Members wishing to rent the clubhouse should consult the attached 2017 AYC Calendar and contact Edith Ellis for further information (tel: 212-9256, e‑mail: email@example.com). Rental fees are as follows:
Fewer than 50 attendees: $200 (new member); $175 (established members)
More than 50 attendees: $375 (new member); $200 (established members)
Wedding events (rehearsal dinners, reception, etc.): $375
Mon-Thurs rentals are available for established members at $75 off the normal rate.
An additional $100 deposit is required; it will be refunded if the renter complies with terms and the clubhouse is left in good condition. There is an optional clean-up fee of $60.
The AYC Capital Campaign: Please consider helping the AYC to preserve the club for another generation. The Capital Reserve Fund, incorporated in the By-Laws, provides for future needs for capital to preserve and maintain the Club. Along with volunteering, a Capital Reserve contribution is an important way to help secure the current and future health of the Club. The accompanying payment form features a space to note your contribution!
Please remit dues by June 16th to be eligible for all member privileges. Contact any officer with questions. Please include an email address on your application.
Thank you very much for your cooperation and support! We look forward to seeing you this summer.
